I’m cautiously placing a single foot into Fall.
Summer isn’t completely dead yet. And I’m still blissfully rocking flip flops and white shorts, totally un-phased by my obvious fashion blunders. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m detecting a subtle change in the air these days. Fall is most definitely coming. And I’m going be ready for her when she arrives. Complete with snacks.
Yes, snacks. All events (and even non-events) require snacks. And the arrival of Fall is certainly an event (or non-event) worthy of snackage. So to prepare for this occasion, I took everyone’s favorite Summer snack (i.e. chips and salsa) and gave it a Fall face-lift by adding in one of my favorite Fall fruits: apples.
This Spicy Apple-Tomato Salsa has just the right mix of Summer and Fall flavors. And it’s got a very nice kick to it as well (but feel free to dial back on the amount of jalapeño peppers for less heat)! It’s what I like to call “transition-salsa”. And I’m going to be eating it non-stop for the next two months. It’s perfect for parties, game day or basically anytime when you’re craving chips and salsa (=always).
While I’m sitting over here awaiting the arrival of Fall, I’ve got three blogging friends who are awaiting the arrival of something MUCH bigger in their lives: babies! Ashley from The Recipe Rebel, Denise from Sweet Peas and Saffron and Kristine from Kristine’s Kitchen are all expecting little ones soon. And today, we’re having a virtual baby shower for them to celebrate. Yahoo!
All three ladies are already seasoned Moms. And I’m excited for them that their families are continuing to grow!
Be sure to check out all the links below to see what dishes everyone “brought” to the baby shower today. I know you’ll find some serious inspiration for Fall cooking and baking!
Cheers,
Liz
Spicy Apple-Tomato Salsa
Ingredients
- 1 (15-ounce) can petite diced tomatoes
- 1 (15-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 large apple, peeled, cored and diced
- 1 cup diced yellow onion
- 1/2 cup diced red pepper
- 2-3 jalapeño peppers, minced
- 2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup cilantro, roughly chopped
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine all the ingredients except for the cilantro over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Then stir in the cilantro and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Transfer the salsa to a clean container and allow it to cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate to chill.
- Serve with your favorite tortilla chips.
- The salsa can be stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator for 3-4 days.

I love it! I’m a huge fan of mango salsa, so I can totally get down with this 🙂
Yeah! Thanks, Sarah!
I am SO intrigued by this. I won’t rest until I taste this fabulous combination! Off to buy nacho chips …
Yeah! Let me know how you like it, Jennifer!
I like the addition of apples, so fall appropriate.
Thank you, Catalina! Happy Halloween!
So into this salsa, love the flavors!!
Thanks, Matt! It was really great!
This is such a great salsa, Liz! I’m so loving that you added apples in here. Sounds amazing!!
Thanks, Gayle. I hope you have a great weekend. XOXO!!
What an awesome, simple and delicious idea! Never had apple salsa, but would love to try it!
Thank you, Mira. I hope you try it out!
I love salsas in every combination there is! This is a new one, and it sounds delicious! Happy Halloween, Liz. 🙂
Thanks, Marcie!
Apples in SALSA!? BOMB.
That’s the sound of my mind being blown. Genius!
Thank you for the wonderful compliment, Kelly! If you try it, I would love to hear about it!
Love your twist!! Very fall-ish. I can totally do this 🙂
You can certainly do this, Katya! 🙂
I could make this for my friendsgiving gathering!
Oh yeah it would be perfect for that! Let me know if you try it out!
I’ve never thought about apples in salsa – makes total sense.
Right? It’s really good. First time for me too. I’ve done other fruits – mango, peaches and nectarines. But apples never crossed my mind until last week. Glad I tried it!
I have been meaning to just make my own salsa because I find I’m never that satisfied with the ones in the store – even the nice looking ones. I will definitely be trying this out! Love the idea of apples in it.
I agree that the store bought salsa’s are always a bit underwhelming. I’m glad you found my recipe! I hope you like it. Let me know how it comes out!
I love the idea of apples in salsa…a nice autumn tailgate treat!
Thanks, Annie! It’s perfect for tailgating!
Apples in salsa – just brilliant! I bet the spicy-sweet combo is amazing with some salty tortilla chips!
Exactly! It’s so good with some nice salty chips. Thanks, Kristine!
Oh I love this — I am a huge salsa fan, and I think it’s great that you’ve ‘winterized’ it!
Thank you so much, Sue! I think we should all be enjoying salsa all year long! It’s too good to save only for summer months.
Liz, this looks awesome! What a great way use to apples in a savory way! This will make a great fall appetizer for Thanksgiving!
Yes, it’s perfect for Thanksgiving. That’s kind of what I had in mind for it! Thanks, Connie!
I love the idea of adding apples to salsa. So creative!
Thanks, Jennifer!
Woah, love this salsa! And congrats on the move 🙂
Thank you so much, Aimee!
Just returned from a vacation in Kentucky, where I bought a mild Sweet Salsa from an Amish produce stand. It is incredible, and the secret ingredient is apples! Since the Amish obviously don’t market their goods online, I was hoping I’d find a similar recipe on the Web. Yours sounds like it could be very close! Hope so, as I could eat this salsa by the spoonfuls! Looking forward to making your version! Thanks!
Glad you found me! Let me know if you try out the recipe and how it compares to the one you bought!
This salsa’s flavors are seriously intriguing me, Liz! Love the sound of apples with tomatoes!
It’s the perfect savory-sweet snack!
I don’t know who made up that stupid rule about no white after Labor Day! Totally bogus because I’m still enjoying the warmer weather in my white attire too Liz! This is the perfect recipe to ease into fall. Never thought of adding apples to salsa, but it sounds fabulous. Best wishes to all the expectant mothers!
Yeah, that Labor Day rule is silly. It’s warm, so I’m still wearing my Summer clothes! I hope you try out the salsa, Mary Ann!
I LOVE fruit in a salsa! We are in full on fall mode here, but only because the weather has dictated it (it’s downright chilly and rainy and grey!). This definitely has to happen soon!
I hope you try it out, Ashley! Perfect for your chilly weather!
This looks awesome and I love that you added apples! It still feels like summer here during the day as well and this salsa is the perfect transition to fall!
Yeah! I’m all about those transition foods right about now!
You ladies have seriously made my day! Thanks so much for the shower, I wish I could taste your salsa in person, because it looks amazing! Love that it has a summer/fall thing going.
So glad we could all come together to celebrate. And I wish it was in real life!
Love this fall twist!!!
Thanks, Gaby!
Summer is definitely not over yet, it was about 104 this week, but I’m ready to see it go haha! It’s just been SO hot here that summer isn’t that enjoyable sometimes. This salsa looks awesome! I love the apple tomato combo 🙂
OMG that is tooooo hot for me! I’d be melting. I hope you give the salsa a try!
You’re inchinin your foot into fall… I’ve got my big toe in. The change in weather has my attention as well as the few pumpkins I spied at the market last weekend. Fall is upon us! My goodness, I would have never thought to include apples in a salsa, Liz! It sounds fabulous, with that hint of sweet against the spice. We just need to get together and share our Mexican food creations from the past two weeks! LOL – Gorgeous reshare – and I’m glad you did! xo
Seriously! We need a Mexican-themed party. Just you and me and all the tacos and chips and dips!
This looks totally amazing!
Thanks, Heather!
I rock the flip flops 365!! Love this salsa too 🙂
Well, that’s some California living for you! Lol. Wish I could do that here in New England!
Salsa is one of my all-time most favorite things to eat, ever. It is always my justification for eating an entire bag of chips after dinner – hey, at least I had a ton of veggies with them. And now I’ll be able to say there was fruit, too – love the addition of the apples, Liz!
Yes, totally balanced diet right here! 🙂
This is a pitch-perfect salsa recipe. I will definitely give it a try while watching a movie. Can I use regular/large tomatoes?
I haven’t tried using fresh tomatoes, but it should work. Just watch the level of liquid. And you may want to peel them, too.
I love that you added apples to this salsa, that would be SO good! Can’t wait to try this!
Thanks, Stacey! Let me know if you try it!
I never thought to add apples to salsa but it sounds AMAZING! I love the combo of late summer and fall flavors!
I hope you try it out! It’s the perfect Fall snack!
What a perfect snack for bridging the seasons!
I’m all about the snacking!
I just won a salsa making competition with this recipe!
Really? That’s so awesome and fun!
I’ve seen not any better combo like an apple and tomato salsa. How delicious! I love the colour and all the flavours in this dish. I’m going to have to try this recipe for sure. Saving for later.
Thanks, Alana! It’s a good one and I hope you love it!
wow, so delicious and yummy tomato salsa recipe. I really like spicy foods. Thank you for sharing this wonderful article.
Glad you enjoyed it!
